In an era of rampant mis- and disinformation, reliable fact-checking has become essential to protect public discourse and democratic institutions. Following a reflection on contemporary forms of fake news, this talk explores the current state of AI-based multimodal fact-checking, highlighting recent advances and persistent challenges. Get to know DEFAME, our state-of-the-art fact-checking system that builds on our challenge-winning text-only predecessor, InFact, and now leads the field in multimodal claim verification. To conclude, let us discuss open problems such as ambiguity, media authenticity, and trust in AI-generated verdicts.

Mark Rothermel is a PhD student at the Multimodal AI Lab, led by Prof. Dr. Anna Rohrbach and Prof. Dr. Marcus Rohrbach at TU Darmstadt. His research focuses on multimodal fact-checking. Together with Tobias Braun, he developed the fact-checking system InFact, which was awarded at the 2024 Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing (EMNLP) conference in Miami, USA.
