Kawa Nazemi is a Human-Computer Interaction and Visual Analytics professor at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. He heads the HCI and Visual Analytics research group and the department on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Visual Analytics. Professor Nazemi and his team are examining the comprehensive processes encompassing data collection, transformation, and information extraction. Their work incorporates variousartificial learning methodologies and interactive visualizations, emphasizing the integral role of human participation throughout these processes.

His research aims to achieve a harmonious integration of AI and interactive visualization techniques. Driven by understanding the complexities and nuances in both fields, Kawa Nazemi and his group seek to bridge the gap between advanced computational capabilities and human interpretative skills. The focus is on seamlessly integrating artificial intelligence methods with interactive visualizations.

Kawa Nazemi’s academic work and research began in 2007 at the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research (IGD). At Fraunhofer, he was instrumental in researching and developing intelligent tutoring systems within the eLearning and Knowledge Management competence center. He also headed the Semantics Visualization research group, emphasizing the generation of semantic data structures via machine learning in the Information Visualization and Visual Analytics competence center. Moreover, he held the position of deputy head for both competence centers. In addition to his other academic roles, Kawa Nazemi also served as an adjunct senior lecturer at the Munster Technological University in Cork from 2018 to 2021. Nazemi’s professional background is marked by his management of numerous European and national projects and a substantial number of industrial research contracts.

Kawa Nazemi holds a Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.) in computer science from the Technische Universität Darmstadt (summa cum laude) under the guidance of Dieter Fellner. His research achievements have been recognized with awards such as the Burgen Scholarship Award and numerous best paper awards. Kawa Nazemi is a senior member of IEEE, as well as a member of ACM, GI, and HI. Nazemi is co-organizing various conferences, including the “International Conference on Information Visualisation” (IEEE). He participates in several organizational boards and program committees. Additionally, Nazemi contributes as a reviewer for numerous journals and conferences and offers his expertise to the European Commission and various European states, reviewing both project proposals and ongoing projects.

He also regularly assesses teaching and research cooperation projects for the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, DAAD and Erasmus.
